Abstract  Investigating on hydrocarbon source rock potentiality of Gadvan, Kazhdumi and Pabdeh formations using Rock-Eval pyrolysis in Aghajari giant oilfield shows that Gadvan and particulary Kazhdumi formations have potential to generate hydrocarbon. Results indicate that hydrocarbon potential is low for Gadvan Formation while, the Kazhdumi and Pabdeh formations show much better potential. Type of organic matter indicates that Gadvan, Kazhdumi and Pabdeh formations contain type III, II/III and II kerogen, respectively. Based on Tmax values derived from Rock - Eval pyrolysis, Gadvan and Kazhdumi formations are thermally mature and entered oil window stage while none of Pabdeh samples crossed it to catagenetic stage. Organic facies C for Gadvan Formation, BC for Kazhdumi Formation and B-BC for Pabdeh Formation are deduced from organic facies curve suggesting, marine persistent anoxic to oxidizing conditions prevailed during deposition. Finally, amongst the three studied formations, Kazhdumi Formation with highest organic carbon content, better potential and optimum thermal maturation is introduced as the best source rock for ail accumulation in Aghajari oilfield Â
